Marcell from the ceiling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcell Freiherr von der Betten (baptized January 21, 1784 in Emstek ; † 1809 in Vienna ) was a German canon .

Life

Marcell von der Betten comes from the old Lower Saxon noble family von der Blankets , namely the Catholic branch based on Gut Lethe near Emstek. He was a son of Adolf Freiherr von der Betten. At the age of 13 he received a prebend at Lübeck Cathedral on March 21, 1797 , which Wilhelm Otto Freiherr von der Betten (* 1767, also 1768–1847) had waived in his favor. With this Marcell became one of four Catholic canons in the otherwise Lutheran cathedral chapter as the fourth Catholicus .

When the cathedral chapter was secularized in the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803, like all canonicals existing at the time of secularization , it retained the associated privileges and income until the end of his life. He died as a student in Vienna.
