Marcin Rożek
Marcin Rożek (born November 8, 1885 in Kosieczyn near Zbąszynek ; † May 19, 1944 in KL Auschwitz ) was a Polish sculptor and painter and a university professor in Poznań .
Life
In 1893 he moved with the family to Wolsztyn . Since 1900 he trained as a stonemason in Poznan . Thanks to a scholarship, he was able to study at an art school in Berlin and later at the art academy in Munich (1905–1909) and in Paris (1909–1911).
Since 1913 he lived in Poznań, where he a. a. participated in the Wielkopolska Uprising . He later devoted himself to artistic activity and became the first professor at the School of Sculpture at the School of Applied Arts, which later became the Poznań Academy of Art .
During the German occupation of Poland 1939–1945 he was arrested in 1941 and imprisoned in Fort VII in Posen . Because he refused to make a bust of Hitler, he was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in July 1943, where he was murdered a year later.
In 1968 the artist museum Muzeum Marcina Rożka in Wolsztyn was founded for him .
