Marco Antonio Serna Díaz

Hermano Marco Antonio Serna Díaz (born July 11, 1936 in San Vicente Ferrer , Antioquia , Colombia , † December 31, 1991 in Ayapel , Colombia) was a Colombian herpetologist , ornithologist and naturalist .

Live and act

Serna was the son of Marco Antonio Serna and Anna Judith Díaz. On June 20, 1950, he joined the fraternity of the Brothers of Christian Schools in San Pedro, Antioquia, where his passion for science was sparked. From 1956 to 1958 he studied in San Antonio de Prado. On January 10, 1962, he took his religious vows with the brothers in the Christian schools.

From 1970 to 1991 Serna was curator of the Bird, Amphibian and Reptile Department at the Museo de La Salle in Bogotá . He also taught as a professor of ornithology at the Universidad de Antioquia .

Serna was both president of the Sociedad de Antioquena Ornitología, which he co-founded in 1984, and the Asociación Colombiana de Ornitología, two well-known ornithological organizations in Colombia.

Working with Juan Arturo Rivero , a herpetologist from Puerto Rico, Serna described several new frogs, including Pristimantis dorsopictus , Pristimantis johannesdei , Hyloxalus breviquartus , Pseudopaludicola ceratophryes, and Colostethus ramirezi .

In 1971 he collected a specimen of the Antioquia bushhammer ( Atlapetes blancae ), which was the last record of this species until its rediscovery in 2018.

Dedication names

In 1994 Serna was honored in the species epithet of Atelopus sernai from the genus of the stumpy- footed frogs ( Atelopus ). In 2012, the rewritten Antioquian wren ( Thryophilus sernai ) was named in honor of Serna. The Frochlurch Eleutherodactylus sernai from the genus of the Antilles Whistling Frogs ( Eleutherodactylus ) described by Rivero in 1984 was later synonymous with the species Eleutherodactylus cerates described by John Douglas Lynch in 1975 .
