Marco Arana Zegarra (born October 20, 1962 in Cajamarca ) is a Peruvian environmental activist and politician.

Life

Arana, who was a Catholic priest in the diocese of Cajamarca until 2010, founded the environmental and human rights organization Grufides in 2002 , in which the protest against environmentally hazardous mining practices by the US mining company Newmont Mining in the Yanacocha gold mine was formed.

In 2011 the documentary Operación Diablo was made about his work .

Marco Arana has been a member of the Cajamarca MP for the left-wing electoral alliance Frente Amplio por Justicia, Vida y Libertad in the Peruvian Congress , headed by Verónika Mendoza , since 2016 .
