Verónika Fanny Mendoza Frisch (born December 9, 1980 in Cusco ) is a Peruvian psychologist , teacher and politician. In the legislative period from July 26, 2011 to July 26, 2016, she was the representative of the Cusco region in the Peruvian Congress for the Gana Perú electoral coalition . In the 2016 presidential election in Peru, she came third as a candidate for Frente Amplio por Justicia, Vida y Libertad with 18.8%.

Life

Verónika Mendoza was born on December 9, 1980 in the district of San Sebastián in the province of Cusco as the daughter of the Peruvian Marcelino Mendoza and the French Gabrielle Marie Frisch D'Adhemar. That is why she has French citizenship in addition to Peruvian citizenship.

She attended the Colegio Virgen del Carmen in Cusco. She then studied psychology in Paris at the University of Paris-Diderot until 2003 and then social sciences at the University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle , where she graduated as Maîtrise (Magistra) in 2006 . Finally, she took up a degree in educational science with a focus on Spanish at the National Distance University (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) based in Madrid , which she graduated in 2009. Mendoza has worked as a Spanish teacher, among others at the Center Acadomia Prépa Paris , at the Asociación Pukllasunchis ( Cusco-Quechua : “Let's play”) in Cusco in study groups with intercultural bilingual education and as a professor at the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano in Puno .

In the Peruvian parliamentary elections in 2011, Mendoza, a member of the Peruvian Nationalist Party (PNP), won 47,088 votes as a candidate for the electoral coalition Gana Perú in the Cusco region and entered the Peruvian Congress for the period from July 26, 2011 to July 2016. In 2011 she became deputy chairwoman of the Parliament's Committee on Culture and Heritage. She is also a member of the Committee for Andean, Amazonian and Afro-Peruvian Peoples, Environment and Ecology. She participates in a campaign for the defense of water and land rights. In this context, Mendoza supported protests by indigenous Quechua communities in the province of Espinar against the expansion of a copper mine by the Xstrata mining company in Tintaya . After the police cracked down on the protesters and killed two people, Mendoza left President Ollanta Humala's Gana Perú faction in protest on June 4, 2012 . Shortly afterwards she became a member of the new opposition faction Acción Popular - Frente Amplio .

In the left-ecologically oriented party alliance Frente Amplio por Justicia, Vida y Libertad , Veronika Mendoza was elected as a presidential candidate for 2016 in October 2015. In the first round of the presidential elections on April 10, 2016, she received 18.8% of the valid votes and did not make it into the second round as third-placed. On June 1, 2016, shortly before the second round on June 5, 2016, Mendoza appealed not to vote for Keiko Fujimori and therefore - despite strong political differences - for Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to prevent a return of fujimorismo . To this end, she turned to the residents of her home region in Quechua . After Kuczynski's victory, however, Mendoza emphasized that she would be in opposition with her faction, Frente Amplio .
