Marco Maciel
Marco Antônio de Oliveira Maciel (born July 21, 1940 in Recife , † June 12, 2021 in Brasília ) was a Brazilian politician . From 1995 to 2002 he was Vice President of Brazil , from 2003 to 2011 Brazilian Federal Senator for Pernambuco and from 1985 to 1986 Minister of Education ( Ministério da Educação ) in the government of José Sarney .
Life
Marco Maciel was the son of José do Rego Maciel , Federal MP for Pernambuco from 1955 to 1959, and Carmem Sílvia Cavalcanti de Oliveira Maciel. In 1963 he completed a law degree at the Faculdade de Direito of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco . He was married to Ana Maria Ferreira Maciel, with whom he had three sons.
He was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March 2021 . After he was released from the hospital and received home treatment, he was hospitalized again. In May, Maciel received his second vaccination against Covid-19. He died on June 12, 2021.

Awards
Marco Maciel was the eighth owner of seat 39 of the Academia Brasileira de Letras . He was elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras in 2003 to succeed Roberto Marinho .
