The Marcus Necker Ridge ( English Marcus Necker Ridge ) is an oceanic ridge in the northwestern Pacific between the North Pacific Basin in the north and east, the Mariana Basin in the south and the Mariana Trench in the west.

The area forms a huge mountainous land lying at the bottom of the ocean. 16 mountains ( seamounts ) were determined, the height of which reached 4000 m above ground, and more than 80 mountains, which lie in the range between 2000 and 3000 m.

The name was derived from two islands, which illustrate the dimensions of the sea area: the western border forms the Marcus Island ( Japanese Minami-Torishima ), which belongs to the national territory of Japan , the eastern border marks the tiny island Necker Island ( Hawaiian Mokumanamana ), which belongs to the western group the Hawaiian Islands of the United States belongs.

The sea area of the Marcus Necker Ridge has been intensively researched by oceanographic institutes in the USA, Japan and the Soviet Union since the International Geophysical Year (1957–1958) . Deep-sea research was possibly a pretext for the Soviet Navy to be able to be present with a large number of research vessels and submarines in this strategically important region west of Hawaii. Officials also referred to the economic importance of research into fish stocks in the deep sea region for the Pacific fishing fleet of the Soviet Union.
