Marcus Kann (* 1820 in Vienna ; † February 3, 1886 there ) was an Austrian chess player .

Horatio Caro had published an analysis of the later so-called Caro-Kann-Defense (1. e2 – e4 c7 – c6 ) in the journal Brüderschaft in 1886 . Before that, during the fourth congress of the German Chess Federation in Hamburg in 1885, Kann had defeated Jacques Mieses in just 17 moves with the Caro-Kann defense. This game from the free tournament won by Kann was recorded in the tournament book, while his games from the main tournament, in which he could not qualify for the winning group with four points from seven games, remained unpublished. The Deutsche Schachzeitung (1886, p. 128) dedicated a short obituary to him after his death.
