Marcus Simaika

Marcus Simaika Pascha (also Murqus Simaykah , * 1864 ; † October 2, 1944 ) was an Egyptian official and founder of the Coptic Museum in Cairo .

Marcus Simaika, from a Christian Coptic family, worked as a civil servant a. a. for the Egyptian state railways . From 1906 he was a member and later chairman of the Committee for the Preservation of Arab Monuments, to which he also added the Coptic churches. In 1908 he founded the Coptic Museum and was its first director until his death, even after the museum was taken over by the Egyptian state in 1931.

He was Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London .
