Marcus Vergilius Gallus Lusius

Marcus Vergilius Gallus Lusius (full name form Marcus Vergilius Marci filius Teretina Gallus Lusius ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living around the birth of Christ . Individual stations of his career are known through an inscription dated to 14/37 AD. His career is shown in the inscription in ascending order.

The career of Gallus Lusius begins in the inscription with the rank of Primus Pilus in the Legio XI Claudia . Then he took over the management of the Cohors Ubiorum as prefect . He received the following military awards from Augustus and Tiberius : twice a Hasta pura and Coronae aureae . Subsequently he was first Praefectus fabrum for three years and then tribune of a Cohors prima . At the end of his career he took over the post of idiologist in the province of Aegyptus .

Gallus Lusius was inscribed in the Teretina tribe . He came from Venafrum , today's Venafro , where the inscription was found. In his hometown he was twice duovir and also pontiff . His daughter Lusia Marci filia Paullina was married to Sextus Vettulenus Cerialis , a senator.
