Marek Kwiatkowski
Marek Kwiatkowski (born April 25, 1930 in Caen , France , † August 10, 2016 ) was a Polish art historian .
Life
Marek Kwiatkowski graduated from the History Faculty of the University of Warsaw . While still a student, he began his scientific career at the National Museum in Warsaw . In 1960 he became a curator in the Łazienki Royal Castle in Warsaw, the summer residence of the last Polish king, Stanislaus II August Poniatowski , and was thus responsible for maintaining this architectural work of art. There he founded the first and largest national gallery of Polish sculptures. At the same time he was the first curator for the reconstruction of the royal palace. As an art historian, he oversaw the renovation of the Bristol Hotel , the Presidential Palace and many other historical buildings across Poland. He completed his habilitation and was appointed professor of art history. Since 1983 he was a member of the Warsaw Science Society .
He was the author of over a hundred publications and 15 books on the history of art in Warsaw and Poland. He privately restored a mansion from the 18th century in Sucha near Warsaw and opened a private museum there on the interior design of various buildings from the region. Despite his many activities, Kwiatkowski found time for his hobby, painting. As a painter, he was known and respected above all for landscape paintings from the Mazovia region.
As director of the Łazienki Palace in Warsaw, he often hosted receptions by foreign heads of state.
In 2002 he was elected Grand Master of the Polish Order of St. Stanislaus . With him a personality of Poland was appointed for this office, who, according to the tradition of the order's founder, King Poniatowski, supports the promotion of art, education and social charitable institutions and thus continues his life's work.
