The Marfin Stadium is a planned football stadium in the Greek capital Athens . It will be the new home ground of the Panathinaikos Athens football team . The stadium is the focal point of a new Panathinaikos sports complex. So belong u. a. a basketball hall (8,000 seats), a volleyball hall (3,000 seats) as well as a swimming pool and a gym for the construction project. The building was originally supposed to be in the Votanikos district , approx. 2.5 km west of the city center. Although shell construction had already begun on the entire complex, there is currently discussion about building the stadium in the Katechaki district.

history

Panathinaikos played in the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium since 1922 . In 2005, UEFA disqualified him for the Champions League .

Since the city ruled out a new building at the old site, the association made new plans. Originally it was planned to celebrate the centenary in 2008 in the new sporting home, but this could not be implemented.

In the meantime, the football department moved to the Athens Olympic Stadium and was to remain there until the new arena was completed.

At the beginning of November 2008, the Greek record champions Panathinaikos presented the final model for their new stadium, which had been in the planning stage for a long time. The building permit was issued in November. The actual construction started in December 2008 and completion was planned for June 2010. The capacity of 40,000 spectators includes 208 press seats and 464 seats for the disabled. There will be space for 6,817 spectators each on the north and south grandstands. The east stand will be built for a total of 11,920 people, while the west stand will have a capacity of 12,724 spectators.

Long before the arena was completed, the stadium's naming rights were sold to the Marfin Investment Group for ten years . The company is spending 2.1 million euros a year on this, which is roughly the cost of renting the city. A special feature of the new stadium is that it is supposed to be the “greenest” stadium in Europe - in terms of both the club's colors and ecological aspects.

Part of the project is also an arena for the also very successful basketball players from Panathinaikos , which will have a capacity of 6,000 to 8,000 seats. Further sports facilities, for example for swimming and boxing, are being planned, as is a modern shopping center.

The area is and remains the property of the City of Athens and the Greek National Bank . 15 percent of the future income goes to the two owners, the rest goes to Panathinaikos, which has an exclusive right of use initially for 49 years and is to pay an annual rent of 3.3 million euros. The Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, in which Panathinaikos previously played, is to be torn down and make way for a public green area.

In 2013, long-running legal disputes related to the construction of the stadium were resolved. The Areopagus decided that the stadium in Votanikos can be built. In particular, the old Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium does not have to be demolished immediately, but can exist until the new arena is completed.

It is currently unclear how the project will proceed. Greece is in a serious economic crisis and Panathinaikos could not afford the rent for the Athens Olympic Stadium and is currently playing again in the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium. Currently, there are plans to build the new building in Katechaki because of the good connection to the metro and motorway.
