Margaret Fairlie-Kennedy

Margaret Fairlie-Kennedy (born March 27, 1925 in Atlanta , † December 7, 2013 in Ithaca ) was an American composer .

After starting out in the serial composition style, Fairlie-Kennedy switched to more accessible compositions. Since the performance of her piano concerto and her bass quintet in the early 1960s, her music has received critical acclaim, and she has received numerous commissions from chamber music ensembles and contemporary dance ensembles. She worked with Takehiro Ueyama in New York, with Bill Bayles at Bennington College and Peggy Lawler at Cornell University . She was composer in residence at Bennington College and Cornell University .

Her works were u. a. played by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra , the Atlanta String Quartet and the Relache Ensemble and performed at the Eastman School of Music , Carnegie Hall and the Bowling Green College Music Festival , as well as in Paris, Upsala and Beijing. Recordings appeared on the Capstone and Euterpe labels . For Desert Echoes (1999) she received the Performance Award at the Maxfield Parrish Competition of the Philadelphia Classical Symphony .
