Margarete Benda , actually Margaretha Benda , b. Margaretha Remmert (* in Groß Schwein near Glogau , Silesia ; † 1940 in Neuses-Coburg ) was a German writer and actress.

Life

She was born in the village of Groß Schwein as the daughter of the landowner Otto Remmert and his wife Elwiene. Her sister was the well-known pianist and Liszt student Martha Remmert (1853–1941). She trained as an actress and debuted under the guidance of her mentor Otto Devrient at the Court Theater in Weimar . She married the actor and writer Oskar Benda (1845–1915). Both played at the Oldenburg court theater for four years from 1884 . In 1888 Margarete Benda went to the Deutsche Theater Berlin . Although she had received an engagement for six years, she had to leave the stage in 1889 due to a nervous problem. She returned to her husband, who was now head of the court theaters in Coburg and Gotha . She subsequently appeared in guest performances on the stage of both theaters.

Benda had already published stories in the Berliner Bürgerzeitung as a teenager . Around 1900 she finally devoted herself to drama and published, among other things, the one-act play Auf dem Fahrrade in 1896 , which was performed in Coburg, Gotha and Eisenach , among others .
