The EHL Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH) is a higher technical school in the hotel and catering industry based in Passugg . The training areas range from vocational training to become a hotel and catering specialist, to the course to become a qualified hotelier-restaurateur HF, to a bachelor's degree in international hospitality management HES-SO (curriculum of the École hôtelière de Lausanne ). Both the German and English training programs at the SSTH are federally recognized. The hotel management school is housed in the building of the former Kurhaus Passung.
Profile of the SSTH
The SSTH has been training specialists and executives for the hotel and catering industry since 1966. The training areas range from vocational training to become a hotel and catering specialist, to the course to become a certified hotelier-restaurateur HF, to a bachelor's degree in international hospitality management HES-SO (curriculum of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne). The academic teaching of modern management skills is combined with practical training. In various in-house restaurants, as well as at reception and in housekeeping, the students put what they have learned in theory into practice. Around 300 students from 20 nations study on the campus in Passugg near Chur.
The SSTH - member of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), the world's number 1 hotel management school - is the only school in Switzerland to be recognized in its German and English training programs according to the federal framework curriculum and is classified as a tertiary education.
Training programs and diplomas
Founded by Markus Christoffel in 1966, the hotel department of the hotel secretary school in Chur developed into today's Hotel Management School Passugg. The business school continuously expanded its program and a short time later relied on students from the Far East. In 1972 the first “Special Courses” started in English. The SSTH developed step by step from the hotel secretary school to a higher technical school with training programs over several levels.
Hotel communication specialist (basic vocational training)
The learners are prepared for the world of the hotel industry in a 360 degree lesson. In the basic vocational training, the hotel guests and their needs relating to the hotel experience are the focus. During the training, a broad spectrum of in-depth basic knowledge of all areas of hospitality is imparted: kitchen, housekeeping, service and hotel reception. Half of the three-year training takes place at the Passugg hotel management school and half in two different hotels, where what is learned is put into practice.

Higher technical School
The training at the higher technical school can be completed in German or English and includes the elementary hospitality management functions such as business, marketing, HR and communication. The academic training is combined with practical specializations in gastronomy and housekeeping. An essential feature of the three-year specialist and management training at the SSTH is the focus on entrepreneurial and practice-oriented thinking and acting.

This is based on the curriculum of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, the world's number 1 hotel management school, and is therefore also linked to the Bologna system. Graduates of the bachelor's degree at the SSTH in Passugg are open to further studies at the EHL or other universities.

School hotel
The continuous expansion of the SSTH's study programs led to a growing number of students over time. In order to convey the professional skills in the hotel and catering industry holistically, the aim was to combine theory and practice in one place. This offered itself in the Kurhaus of Passugger Heilquellen AG.
The Kurhaus was built due to an "Alpine euphoria" at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. It was hoped that the mountains and the Swiss springs would cure many ailments. The Passugger Ulricus Spring, whose water was used to treat stomach ailments, became particularly famous. This then justified the conversion of the former inn to the Kurhaus Passugg. An excerpt from the guest list from 1911 shows how international the residents of the spa hotel were already back then, they came from Buenos Aires, Chicago or Paris for a cure in Passugg. After the spa tourism subsided, the spa hotel is now again populated with students from all over the world.
Cooperations and partnerships
Over the years, SSTH has built up various partnerships. There are particularly close partnerships with the Graubünden Tourism Campus and hotelleriesuisse . The SSTH is committed to the educational mandate in the region through the Graubünden Tourism Campus. Hotelleriesuisse sits on the school's board of directors.
In order to offer training at the highest level across all levels and to anchor internationality in education, the SSTH has developed partnerships with various universities and colleges around the world. The SSTH supports the development of specific hotel management programs and thus a qualified training of students in hospitality and tourism on site.

International Food Festival
The SSTH students regularly translate theory into exciting practical projects. The Food Festival is part of the project management class training. Organized internally as a show event in 1989, the event has been public since 2003 and is attended by around 2,000 people annually.
At 20 tasting stands, the students present specialties and exotic items from their home countries. Workshops, tastings and presentations complete the program.
