Margarete Haller , pseudonym of Margarethe Deinert , also Margarete Deinet , (born August 1, 1893 in Hamburg , † July 22, 1995 in Rahlstedt ) was a German author for children and young people. Among other things, she wrote the five volumes on Gisel and Ursel .

Life

Margarete Haller was born as the daughter of a Hamburg businessman. Her real name was Margarethe Deinert. After completing her schooling, she began to volunteer in 1913: she transcribed about 100 scientific works in Braille . Due to the inflation after the First World War , she lost her fortune and had to take up a job: She ran a bookstore at Wandsbeker Chaussee 97 in Hamburg. Her brother was also a bookseller and had his business on the Mundsburg, her sister ran another bookstore on Wandsbeker Marktstrasse. In 1943 all three shops of the Deinert siblings fell victim to a bomb attack. Margarethe Deinert was briefly imprisoned in Fuhlsbüttel after she had said that the war had been lost and had to be ended.

Margarethe Deinert later ran the bookstore “Geschw. Deinert ”in Schweriner Strasse in Rahlstedt, which she handed over to the married couple Elna and Peter Blänsdorf in 1967. She lived for a time in Ebersmoorweg 6. Margarethe Deinert became church director in Rahlstedt and organist in the Eilbeck Church of Reconciliation. She spent her twilight years, temporarily blind, in the “Am Hegen” retirement home, where she also died. Margarethe Deinert was buried in Rahlstedt on her 102nd birthday.

With a total circulation of around seven million books, she became a successful writer. This career - under the pseudonym Margarete or M. Haller - began in 1931 after an employee encouraged her to send a story to Franz Schneider Verlag .

Margarete Haller's books for eight to fourteen year olds were realistic and unsentimental. Among other things, the stories about the identical twins Gisel and Ursel , which were published before the Second World War and, reworked, continued to be published in the post-war period, became known. Almost all of Haller's books were published by Franz Schneider Verlag.
