Margaretha Wulfraet (also: Margareta; * February 19, 1678 in Arnhem ; † 1760 ibid. [Buried January 26, 1760]) was a Dutch portrait and history painter.

life and work

Margaretha Wulfraet was born in February 1678 as the daughter of Catharina van 's-Heerenberg and the German-born painter Mathijs Wulfraet (1647–1727) in Arnhem and baptized on February 20, 1678 in the Grote Kerk . An older brother, a younger brother and two younger sisters are known to have been born there. The family probably moved to more affluent Amsterdam in 1681, where Margaretha Wulfraet learned the trade from her father and worked with him. Among other things, she made copies of his paintings, some of which he passed off as his own, as well as pictures “in the manner of Caspar Netscher ”.

Margaretha Wulfraet remained unmarried and moved back to Arnhem in 1741 - further stopovers are possible but are not known. She died in early 1760 and was buried in Arnhem on January 26th.

A notarial inventory drawn up shortly after her death (nl. Boedelinventaris) is probably the only surviving documentation of an artist's estate in Gelderland from this time and proves that the 81-year-old had larger quantities of painting utensils in the house before her death, as well as around sixty paintings and more than left eighty books.

Only a few of her paintings have survived or have been identified as by her hand. Some documented paintings in private collections have been lost, others have only survived through engravings made from them.

A multi-page representation of Margaretha Wulfraet can be found in 1750 in Johan van Gool's Lexicon of Dutch Painters, whose text served for a long time as the basis for subsequent encyclopedias. Only research in the Arnhem city archive around the turn of the millennium brought to light further biographical details and information about the inventory that was left behind.
