Margret Ortstein (* 20th century) is a German local politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) and former mayor of Aachen .

Live and act

The trained primary school teacher Margret Ortstein was one of the founding members of the Green Party for the Aachen area in the early 1980s and was also elected to the party's first board. In the local elections in 1989, the party, and with it Margret Ortstein, was able to move into the city council for the first time. Here she belonged to the main committee. Just two years later she was elected for the office of second mayor after her party colleague Stephanie Weis-Gerhardt resigned from this office for professional reasons. In the following local elections in 1994, Ortstein was able to repeat this success and this time was elected third mayor of Aachen alongside Ulrich Daldrup ( CDU ) and Astrid Ströbele ( SPD ). One focus of her work was the advocacy of women's rights and she particularly supported the 3rd World Forum in Aachen, which is increasingly concerned with the issue of violence against women. In addition, she was active as a representative of the city of Aachen on the board of directors of the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen.

After this legislative period, Ortstein devoted himself more to school service and in 2003 took over the school management of the GGS Schönforst in Aachen. She finally retired on August 1, 2011.
