The construction of the first stone church building in Yaroslavl, the Assumption Dormition Cathedral, started in 1215 at the instigation of the Grand Duke of Vladimir Konstantin Vsevolodovich . It was consecrated in 1219 by Bishop Kyrill on the feast of the Assumption of Mary . In contrast to most churches in northeastern Russia, it was built of brick and the facade was clad with white stone.

In 1501 a fire broke out and the cathedral was badly damaged. The reconstruction of the cathedral based on the Moscow Annunciation Cathedral was completed in 1516. In 1642 there were plans to demolish the old cathedral and build a new one. In 1649 a 55 meter high bell tower was finally inaugurated .

It was badly damaged again by a major fire in 1670, but after a few years it was rebuilt in the Byzantine style with five onion domes. The interior was lavishly painted again from 1671 to 1674. In the following two centuries the building underwent further renovations, for example in 1788 when the diocese was moved to Yaroslavl. In the years 1832 to 1836, the Russian architect Avraam Ivanovich Melnikov designed a new bell tower and in 1844 the dome was gilded.

In the 20th century, the Dormition Cathedral was badly damaged during the Yaroslavl uprising against the Bolsheviks , but it was partially renovated by 1924. From 1930 until its demolition in 1937, the building housed a granary. On August 26, 1937, the sacred building was blown up and a city park was created in its place.

Reconstruction was only decided on October 26, 2004. The architect Alexej Denisov won the competition for the project. The consecration of the new Dormition Cathedral was on 12 September 2010 during the celebrations for the anniversary of the city by the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill I take.
