Dormition Cathedral

The Assumption Cathedral ( Russian Успенский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Vladimir , built in the 12th century . At the time of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir-Suzdal , it was the most important sacred building in northeastern Russia , and later it served as a model for other places of worship, such as the cathedral of the same name in Moscow . Today it serves both as a state museum and as the center of the Vladimir Eparchy . As an important component of the White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal , the cathedral is a UNESCO - World Heritage Site .

The cathedral was built between 1158 and 1160 by order of the Prince of Vladimir, Andrei Bogoljubski , as a three-aisled structure with three apses . As early as 1185 to 1189 it was widened to five naves and lengthened by a yoke. The facades are structured vertically by pilasters with Corinthian capitals and horizontally by two rows of blind arcades. Only a few fragments have survived from the first frescoes in the Cathedral of the Assumption. The cathedral was decorated with new wall paintings in 1408 by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chorny . From these individual portraits of the monumental representation of the Last Judgment have survived. Most of the current frescoes in the cathedral date from the 19th century. In 1810 a bell tower was built next to the cathedral.
