Construction of the Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin Mary began in 1696. Construction work on the building was completed in 1701. In the same year a fire destroyed the new church building. The cathedral , rebuilt in 1716 , was finally consecrated by the Archbishop of Nizhny Novgorod in 1719.
In 1913 the church was completely renovated inside and out. In the 1930s the cathedral was closed by the Bolsheviks . During the Second World War a pharmacy and a warehouse were housed here.
The Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin Mary remained closed until 1993. It was only rededicated on June 3, 1993. Of the original 46 icons, 43 have been preserved to this day.
On July 23, 2008, the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin presented the icon of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to the diocese . This had previously been stolen from the cathedral in 2004. In 2007 the icon was bought by an Estonian collector and brought to Russia.
