The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary ( Russian Храм Успения Пресвятой Богородицы ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the city of Tolyatti in Russia . The Assumption Church was built from 1998 to 2000.

history

A predecessor to today's Church of the Assumption was built shortly after Tolyatti was founded . This church was made of wood for a long time and was later replaced by a stone structure. In 1921, all of the church's property was confiscated to help the city's starving residents. Eventually the church closed and in 1930 the bells were removed. After the floods of 1950 the church was finally destroyed.

On August 28, 1995, a cross was placed on the future site of the church on the bank of the Volga . In December 1998 construction began on the church, as well as a library, a Sunday school , an icon painting workshop and the rectory.

On June 18, 2000, the first service took place in the church building. A month later, the archbishop of Samara and Syzran lifted the main dome onto the building.

The consecration of the Church of the Assumption took place on August 28, 2000. Shortly before Easter , nine bells were placed in the dome .
