The Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary ( Serbian Cyrillic : Црква Покрова Пресвете Богородице, Crkva Pokrova Presvete Bogorodice) in Vareš is a Serbian Orthodox Church in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The church was built and consecrated in 1884 or 1891. It is consecrated to the protection and intercession of Mary. The church is the parish church of the parish Vareš in the deanery of Sarajevo of the metropolitan Dabrobosnia of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The church is in the center of the town of Vareš. The Commission of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary a national monument in 2009.

It is not clear whether the church was built in 1884 or 1891. According to the population, the church was built in 1884. According to an inscription on the church bell, the Orthodox church was built in 1891. The parish of Vareš was established either in 1884 or 1891.

The first priest of the church was Damjan Nikolić . It followed as Pope Damjan Radaković . Jovan Marjanovic was 1895-1901 priest of the parish . Trifko Maksimović who was only a priest in 1901. Maksim Jovanović from 1901 to 1906. Sava Ristić from 1906 to 1908. He later became priest of the Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul in Kakanj . Petar Đosović served as a priest in the church from 1908 to 1911. From 1911 to 1915 Bogdan Petrović was Pope of the Church. From 1915 to 1916 in the middle of the First World War , the church is closed and slightly damaged. Sava Savić was a priest from 1916 to 1919. From 1919 to 1931 Jovo Popović was a priest in the parish of Vareš. From 1931 to 1932 he was Pope of the Josif Bogdanović Church . Jovan Marjanović was a priest from 1932 to 1935.

From 1935 to 1941 Slavko Stanković was a clergyman in the church. The church was closed and damaged during World War II . In addition, there was no priest from 1941 to 1945. In 1946, one year after the end of the war, Danilo Marjanac came to the parish of Vareš and remained active as a priest until 1971. Ranko Gunjić took over the parish from 1971 to 1974 . Slobodan Lubarda is Pope from 1974 to 1988. Delivoje Rajak is a priest of the Church from 1988 to 1992.

With the beginning of the Bosnian War (1992–1995), the church remained closed from 1992 to 1998. For the third time in a century, the church has suffered war damage. From 1992 to 1998 the entire Serbian population fled Vareš. From 1998 to October 25, 1999, the priest Zoran Jerinić from Blagaj served in the church as a priest. And from October 25, 1999, Father Boris Banduka , who is also Pope of Kakanj , runs the parish of Vareš.
