Maria Schnee (Atzlricht)

Church of Our Lady of the Snow

The Filialkirche Mariä Schnee is the Catholic village church in the hamlet of Atzlricht , a district of the city of Amberg in the Upper Palatinate . It was donated in 1664 by Franz Albrecht Freiherr von Gobel, the owner of the Hofmark Atzlricht.

The nave was built over an octagonal floor plan. The choir and the sacristy adjoin the west side , above which a mighty onion dome rises.

In 1723 a descendant of the church founder, Baron Christian Wilhelm von Gobel, had the interior of the church redesigned. Since then, the altarpiece has shown Mary above the two main churches consecrated to her in Rome : Santa Maria Maggiore , which relates to the patronage of Maria Schnee , and Santa Maria Rotonda .
