The Basilica of Mary Queen of Peace is a Syro-Malankan church in Thiruvananthapuram in the Indian state of Kerala . The Church of the Grand Archbishopric of Trivandrum is the first Syro-Malankar Catholic Church to be raised to the rank of Catholic minor basilica and the fifth basilica in Kerala.

history

The former Pompador Cinema Theater in the Palayam area of ​​Trivandrum was converted into a church and consecrated on March 11, 1933. On the same day, Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Panicker ascended to the throne in this Procathedral . The roof of the new church was made of sheet metal, which is why it was called the “sheet metal church” (Thakara Palli).

The foundation stone of today's church was laid in 1950 by Archbishop Mar Ivanios, it was built in an Indian-neo-Gothic style. The church was consecrated on February 22, 1965 by Archbishop Benedict Varghese Gregorios Thangalathil Maria, Queen of Peace . Pope John Paul II visited the church on February 8, 1986 as part of his India tour. Pope Francis awarded the church the rank of a minor basilica in 2008 ; it was awarded on December 7, 2008 by Grand Archbishop Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal .
