Baselios Cleemis Cardinal Thottunkal , also Isaac Mar Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal ( Malayalam മാർ ബസേലിയോസ്‌ ക്ലീമിസ് ; born June 15, 1959 in Tirumoola, Mukkoor, District Pathanamthitta , Kerala ), is the current Grand Archbishop of Trivandrum (seat in Thiruvananthapuram ) and head of the uniate head of the Rom Syro Malankar Church . He bears the honorary title His Beatitude (His Beatitude).

Life

The cardinal's baptismal name is Isaac, he comes from the Archeparchy Tiruvalla in the Indian state of Kerala and is the son of the late Malankar Thomas Christians Mathew and Annamma Thottunkal. His ancestors come from the Pakalomattam family , which traditionally provided the archdeacons of the Thomas Christians in the past . Initially, Thottunkal attended the small seminary in Tiruvalla from 1976-1979 , from 1979 to 1982 the papal seminary in Alwaye and 1983-1986 that in Puna .

On June 11, 1986, Baselios Thottunkal was ordained a priest from the then bishop of the Battery Eparchy , Cyril Mar Baselios Malancharuvil . He was sent to Dharmaram College, Bangalore , where he received his Masters in Theology in 1988 . At the same time he worked in the city as a Malankar pastor . Between 1991 and 1996 Baselios studied Thottunkal at the Angelicum in Rome , where he received his doctorate in 1997. On his return to India, he was promoted to spiritual in the seminary, then vicar general (Proto Syncellus) of the Battery eparchy.

On 18 June 2001 appointed Pope John Paul II. The clergy to titular bishop of Chaialum and auxiliary bishop in the archeparchy of Trivandrum, which also has the task of a permanent Apostolic Visitator was associated for the Syro-Malankara faithful in North America and Europe. His episcopal ordination took place on August 15 of that year in Tiruvalla, also by Cyril Mar Baselios Malancharuvil, where he took the suffix Mar Cleemis .

In 2003 Thottunkal was appointed bishop of the eparchy of Tiruvalla and, with its elevation to the archparchy, its first archbishop and metropolitan.

After the death of Grand Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios Malancharuvil , he was elected as his successor by the Holy Synod of the Syro-Malankar Church on February 8, 2007 and was elected by Pope Benedict XVI. confirmed two days later. The solemn enthronement took place on March 3, 2007.

On October 24, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. announced that he wanted to create him cardinal on November 24, 2012. In the consistory of November 24 of the same year he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gregorio VII in the college of cardinals . Until the creation of Soane Patita Paini Mafi , he was the world's youngest living cardinal. In March 2013 he took part in the 2013 conclave , where he was also the youngest member.

Since 2013 he has been chairman of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC).
