The Maria-Hilf-Basilika ( Italian : Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice ) in Turin - Valdocco is the mother house of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was built by Don Bosco .

Location and surroundings

The Catholic church is integrated into the extensive complex of the oratory of Valdocco, consisting of the actual youth recreation facility, school buildings, the Francis of Sales Church, the Provincialate of the Piedmont Province, the Pinardi Chapel and the Italian missionary procuration of the Salesians Don Bosco. The surrounding buildings all date from the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

history

After the Pinardi Chapel (1846) and the Church of St. Francis de Sales (1852) could no longer accommodate the growing number of young people, Don Bosco began to work on the Maria-Hilf-Basilica in spring 1864 after excavating the excavation pit (autumn 1863) to build. Its facade is reminiscent of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, the large dome bears a golden statue of the Virgin Mary, whose head is surrounded by a wreath of stars. The main altarpiece by the painter Lorenzone shows Mary, the help of Christians , at her side choirs of angels, at her feet the 12 apostles.

In 1934, the year of Don Bosco's canonization, another extension was necessary, which was planned and carried out by the architects Mario Ceradini and the Salesian brother Giulio Valotti. The erection of the second dome with a diameter of 12 m entailed the enlargement of the sanctuary and the setting back of the main altar. In addition, two side chapels with the associated galleries were built.

meaning

The basilica is the destination of many pilgrims from all over the world. One of the reasons for this is that Don Bosco's work began here and that the church houses the remains of Don Bosco , Maria Mazzarello and Dominikus Savio . Every year on Patron's Day (May 24th) a statue of Mary Help is led through the city in procession, in which tens of thousands of people take part. This festival is broadcast around the world on television and radio.

Organs

The basilica has an organ system , consisting of a main organ and a small choir organ . The instrument was built in 1941 by the organ builder Giovanni Tamburini. It has 67 registers (approx. 5,100 pipes) on four manual works and a pedal and is the largest organ in Piedmont.

The large main organ stands on the singing stage to the side of the Gospel side of the altar. The instrument has a sweeping free pipe prospect that extends over the entire width of the gallery. The main organ has three manuals. In the side aisle, under the singers' gallery, there is a small choir organ (“Organo Chorale”) with 10 stops on a manual and pedal. The entire organ system can be played from two three-manual gaming tables; the manual of the choir organ can be coupled to each manual of the main organ on the general console. The playing and stop actions are electric.
