The Maria-Ward-Gymnasium in Bamberg ( Bavaria ) is a secondary school for girls. It used to be called the English Lady and was run by the church. Today, in addition to the grammar school, there is also a connected secondary school under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Bamberg .

history

In Bamberg, sisters and co-workers have been committed to educating girls according to the principles of Mary Ward , d. H. to educate and educate on the basis of the Christian image of man. The educational work was only interrupted in the years of National Socialism, when the sisters' permission to teach was withdrawn for ideological reasons.

Until the end of 2001 the institute of the English Misses (Maria Ward Sisters) was responsible for the grammar school and secondary school , part of a worldwide religious order with Ignatian orientation, which is now called the Congregatio Jesu . In 2002 - for financial reasons - the sponsorship of the school was transferred to the Archdiocese of Bamberg , whereby the name was then changed to Maria Ward Schools Bamberg. The day school and the boarding school - facilities that complement the educational offerings of the schools - continued to be run by the Congregatio Jesu. Since August 2011, the day school has also been under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, while the boarding school had to be closed. Great emphasis is placed on a holistic upbringing and the passing on of Christian values. The imparting of social skills, the promotion of different talents and the upbringing of a self-confident woman in family, work and society play a significant role. In 1998 a support association was founded, which has set itself the task of supporting the mentioned concerns of schools and their accompanying institutions.

Training paths

The Maria-Ward-Gymnasium has a linguistic branch as well as an economic and social science branch with a focus on economics and law. In grade 5, the 1st foreign language begins with English and from grade 6 onwards, Latin or French are taught as the 2nd foreign language . If you choose French, you have chosen the economic and social science branch, in which the subjects economics and law as well as business informatics are emphasized. The pupils who have chosen Latin decide after grade 7 whether they want to stay in the linguistic grammar school with French as their third foreign language or whether they want to transfer to the bilingual economic and social science grammar school. After the 9th grade, all students have the opportunity to learn Spanish as a late-beginning foreign language. For this, the first or second foreign language is deselected. On average, around 300 female students attend the economics and social science branch and approximately 600 female students attend the linguistic grammar school. In addition, all students who have taken Latin will receive the " Latinum " after the 10th grade , provided they have achieved at least grade 4 or have successfully passed an additional examination after the 9th grade. The upper level works with the Clavius-Gymnasium to increase the choice.
