The Clavius-Gymnasium (CG) is a science and technology high school (NTG) in Bamberg . It also has an economics and social science branch (WSG) with a focus on economics. It is named after Christophorus Clavius , who was best known for carrying out the calendar reform that introduced the Gregorian calendar .

history

The Clavius-Gymnasium was founded in 1794 as an engineering and drawing academy by Leopold Westen . The architect was Gustav Haeberle . From 1833 it became an agricultural and trade school and in 1877 a secondary school . In 1923 the Realschule became an Oberrealschule . In 1938 it was renamed Oberrealschule on Kapuzinerstraße . In 1946 this change was reversed. In 1965 the Clavius-Gymnasium was established as a mathematical and scientific high school . In 1986 it became a high school for mathematics, science and economics . In 1998 a school trial European Gymnasium II took place . In 2002 the Clavius-Gymnasium took on the current form of school with the areas NTG and WSG-W . In July 2005, the Clavius-Gymnasium hosted the 49th Theater Days of the Bavarian high schools .

The first foreign language for all students is English, from the fifth grade onwards. The second foreign language is taught from the sixth grade, whereby the students can choose between Latin and French. At the Clavius-Gymnasium there is also the possibility of taking the second foreign language after the ninth grade and instead taking Spanish as the third, late-onset foreign language. This must then be taken in the remaining three years up to the Abitur. This procedure should make it possible to achieve a basic language competence even in the language that sets in late .

Natural sciences

In the NTG, in contrast to the WSG, the subject chemistry, which begins with the eighth grade, is taught as a core subject. In the upper level there is a range of courses in this area, the school also strengthens its focus on natural sciences in particular by regularly taking part in the youth research competition and the school taking part in the Vision-Ing21 competition of the Förderkreis Ingenieurstudium eV from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region as part of the Bavarian Education Pact .

In addition, the school has an educational partnership with the Robert Bosch GmbH , Werk Bamberg under the initiative Knowledge Factory - Companies for Germany and a further partnership with the Department of Chemical Reaction Engineering of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg completed.

The natural sciences character of the school is also strengthened by the natural sciences lecture series at the CG.

Economics

In the WSG, lessons in business and law begin in the eighth grade as a core subject. This means that his material is treated more intensively than in the NTG, where WR only starts in the ninth grade and is also only taught as a minor subject. In both branches the subject is taught up to and including the tenth grade.

The WSG also offers the subject of business informatics, which teaches students how to apply information technology systems to economic issues.

IT education / e-learning / virtual learning

At the Clavius-Gymnasium, computer science is taught as a regular school subject in grades 9 to 12 of the natural science branch. The CG has participated in IT projects across Europe. In addition, through its former headmaster Rudolf Schmitt, the school is in charge of setting up the e-learning initiative Virtual School .

The school also uses laptop classes that prefer to work with the interactive learning platform BayernMoodle or its successor, mebis - Bavarian State Media Center . The aim of the project is to train the use of hardware and software and to impart media skills.

Media education

In a two-year project phase, a media development plan and a binding media and method curriculum were developed at the Clavius ​​Gymnasium in order to promote the media competence of the students and to achieve standardization in media use. The school was awarded the title Reference School for Media Education by the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art on October 2, 2013 .

Musical education

The school focuses on promoting reading and was able to offer advanced courses in the G9 in the subjects of German, art and music.

Several school play groups are located at the CG, including several choirs (lower school choir, mixed choir), the school orchestra and the school big band. Theater groups can be visited in the lower, middle and upper grades. The Clavius-Gymnasium can also give instrumental lessons.

It is also a tradition at the CG to regularly perform musicals . In 2014 the Broadway musical " Hairspray " was performed. Several ensembles, together with the P seminar “Musical” - which has been held every two years since 2015 - and the middle school drama group performed the well-known musical “ Cabaret ” in 2015 with great success, followed by the musical “Blues Brothers” in 2017 ". Sports facilities

With the gym on Georgendamm, the school uses another triple gym in addition to its own hall, which was newly built in the 2014/15 school year. From the school year 2017/18, both the students of the CG and the students of the Martinschule will have a basketball court financed by the Freundeskreis.

The school today

The Clavius-Gymnasium currently has around 1240 students who are looked after by around 110 teachers . A team of four secretaries takes on the administrative tasks; A caretaker team is available to the CG in building management. The library is administered by a specially employed librarian.

Since the 2013/14 school year, the Clavius-Gymnasium has been rebuilt in four construction phases, each spread over four school years. Construction began in March 2013 and was completed in September 2017. In addition to the renovation of the “Martin” and “Clavius” houses, a third building with 7 new classrooms was added in 2013/14. It replaces the containers that had been in the playground for decades. Since the 2015/16 school year there has been a connection between the buildings. At the beginning of the 2017/18 school year, the renovation was completed after four years of construction.
