Maria Alice (actually Glória Mendes Leal Carvalho , born September 1, 1904 in the municipality of Paião , Figueira da Foz district , † February 13, 1996 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese singer of fados .

Life

She appeared in smaller roles in the popular Lisbon Revues between 1920 and 1926 before turning to fado. In 1928 she sang in a fado hall ( retiro ) called Ferro de Engomar . The present Valentim Pereira Botelho de Carvalho, owner of the Valentim de Carvalho company , then took on the singer's career by giving her appearances and choosing the repertoire and musical accompaniment. In this way he built her into a well-known personality in the revues, fado bars and on the radio. At the same time, she recorded about 40 fados for Brunswick Records , which were distributed by Valentim de Carvalho and contributed to the singer's popularity in Portugal, Spain and Brazil.

After she toured Brazil in 1932 and 1934, she went on tour abroad again in 1943, with the music group Troupe Music-Hall she founded in the Portuguese colonies of Angola , Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe .

In 1945 she married Valentim Pereira Botelho de Carvalho and withdrew from the music business.
