Maria Antonietta Torriani (born January 1, 1840 in Novara , Province of Novara , † March 24, 1920 in Cumiana , Province of Turin ) was an Italian writer.

Live and act

Torriani's first literary attempts go back to her childhood. She took her pseudonym Marchesa Colombi from a character in the comedy "Parini e la satira".

On October 30, 1875 Torriani married the Neapolitan journalist Eugenio Torelli Viollier (1842-1900) in Milan . Together with her husband, she was able to publish articles in literary magazines again and again. Almost at the same time as the marriage, Torelli Viollier founded the Corriere della Sera ; the marriage failed.

Torriani later settled in Gessate , a small community near Milan. She lived there with the scientist and feminist Anna Maria Mozzoni (1837–1920).

Maria Antonietta Torriani died at the age of eighty on March 24, 1920 in Cumiana, where she also found her final resting place.

Natalia Ginzburg and Italo Calvino discovered their work in 1973, and literary studies have been researching it since the 1990s.
