Maria Birnbaum (politician)

Karoline Friederike Maria Theresia Birnbaum (born October 16, 1872 in Gießen ; † August 9, 1959 there ) was a German national liberal politician ( DVP ), a member of the state parliament of the People's State of Hesse and a teacher .

Life

Maria Birnbaum was born as the daughter of the medical professor Karl Friedrich Joseph Birnbaum (1833-1894) and his wife Maria Theresia Pauline Margarethe born. Groppe (1844–1910) was born. In 1888 she took up teacher training at the Catholic boarding school in Marienwerth (Netherlands), which she finished in 1891 by passing the teachers' exam. Then she worked as an educator abroad. From 1899 to 1921 she was employed as a teacher at the secondary girls' school (today: Ricarda-Huch-Schule) in Giessen.

From 1921 to 1931 Birnbaum was a member of the state parliament of the DVP parliamentary group for three electoral terms. As one of only twelve women in the state parliament, she campaigned for women's rights and the school system.

Maria Birnbaum is buried together with her sister Clara in the old cemetery in Gießen.

Honors

The Maria-Birnbaum-Weg in Giessen is named after her.
