Maria Hawes
Maria Hawes , also Maria Billington-Hawes and later Maria Merest , (* April 1816 in London , † April 24, 1886 in Ryde ( Isle of Wight )) was an English concert and oratorio singer with an alto voice .
life and work
Maria Hawes was the daughter of the composer William Hawes (1785–1846), who arranged numerous operas such as Carl Maria von Weber's Freischütz for English stages. He also trained his daughter in singing. Maria Hawes achieved outstanding success at the Birmingham Music Festival in particular in 1846 . She became an esteemed concert and oratorio soloist in England.
Maria Hawes was in contact with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and composed ballads and songs herself. She was married to JD Merest.
