Maria Helfgott

Maria Rebecca Margareta Helfgott (born May 13, 1974 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian organist and musicologist .

education and profession

Helfgott received her first music lessons at the age of 5. At the age of 11 she already began her piano studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . While she was still in high school, she also studied organ concert at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, which she completed with a diploma examination (Mag. Art). In addition, she completed master classes in organ improvisation and harpsichord .

Parallel to her organ studies, she studied musicology and art history at the University of Vienna . The topic of her dissertation was: The Organ Mass . An examination of the organ-accompanied masses from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. (Awarded the dissertation prize of the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna).

Artistic activity

As an organist, Maria Helfgott is known for a wide range of repertoire from early music to the present day. She earned her special merits through the performances of historical Austrian composers and organ works that were previously unknown. Her collaboration with important artists has taken her to several European countries.

Maria Helfgott is the winner of several competitions (e.g. national winner Prima la Musica 1993 and 1997).

She currently accompanies the organ masses in Mitterdorf and Wartberg in the Mürz valley.

Scientific activity

Maria Helfgott is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Institute for Musical Style Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Her research focus is on the research of music-making practice, in particular historical performance practice . Together with Hartmut Krones , she is the editor of numerous music historical writings.
