Hartmut Krones

Hartmut Krones (born October 15, 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian musicologist .

education

Hartmut Krones studied German and pedagogy at the University of Vienna as well as music education , vocal pedagogy and song and oratorio at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts Vienna . He also received a PhD in musicology .

Research and Teaching

Hartmut Krones has been teaching at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 1970 and was appointed full professor there in 1987 and head of the chair for musical style and performance practice . Since 1996 he has also headed the Arnold Schönberg Institute at this university. Krones retired in October 2013. The focus of his work as an author and editor of numerous publications includes historical performance practice , musical symbolism and the music of the 20th century. For Krones, it's about identifying meanings in music. Critical of his approach, it was noted that Krones confused "the musical expression of emotions with program music".

Functions in Austrian musical life

Hartmut Krones has been writing the introductory texts for the programs of the Wiener Musikverein since 1968 . In addition, he is a member of the foundation board of the Arnold Schönberg Center and chairman of the Egon Wellesz Fund at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
