Maria J. Esteban (born April 6, 1956 in Alonsotegi ) is a French-Basque mathematician.

Maria Esteban studied mathematics at the University of Bilbao with a licentiate in 1978 and at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie), where she received her DEA degree in numerical analysis in 1979 and her doctorate in 1981 under Haïm Brezis (Thèse de 3ème Cycle, Dissertation: Problèmes semilinéaires dans des ouverts non bornés ). In 1987 she completed her habilitation at the University of Paris VI with Pierre-Louis Lions (Doctorat d'Etat, habilitation thesis: Sur quelquesproblemèmes variationnels et équations aux derivées partielles non linéaires de la physique mathématique ). From 1981 she was Attachée de Recherche of the CNRS at the University of Paris VI (Laboratory for Numerical Analysis), in 1984 Chargé de Recherche and from 1991 Research Director. She is at the CEREMADE of the Paris-Dauphiné University.

Esteban deals with nonlinear partial differential equations and their numerics with applications in mathematical physics (relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum chemistry, interaction of structures and liquids, etc.) and especially nonlinear elliptical equations and methods of variation.

In 2013/14 and 2014/15 she was on the Abel Prize Committee. In 2016 she became a Fellow of SIAM . She is an honorary doctor in Valencia and at the University of the Basque Country. In 2015 she gave the Mary Cartwright Lecture at the London Mathematical Society. She gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress on Mathematical Physics 2003 in Lisbon and was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematics in Amsterdam in 2008. She is an honorary member of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. In 2012 she became a Knight of the Ordre national du mérite and she is a member of the Basque Academy of Sciences. In 2019 Esteban was elected to the Academia Europaea .

From 2009 to 2012 she was President of the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) and in 2012/13 she chaired the Committee for Applied Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society. From 2015 to 2019 she is President of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM). She is one of the initiators of the European Service Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation (EU-MATHS-IN).
