Maria Popova (born July 28, 1984 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) is a US- based author , intellectual and critic. She is known as the founder of the online platform Brain Pickings . She also writes for the New York Times , Wired and The Atlantic, among others .

Education and early work

Popova graduated from the American College of Sofia Middle School in Bulgaria in 2003. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a degree in communications . Popova paid for her tuition with four part-time jobs in addition to her full-time study: as an advertising agent for the university newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian, as an intern for a local writer, as a student trainee at the Anneberg Center for Performing Arts, and as an employee of a small advertising agency.

Brain pickings

In 2005, when Popova was working in an advertising agency, she noticed that her employees were circulating advertising industry information in the office for inspiration. Popova believed that exposure to information outside of one's own industry stimulates creativity . This led them to send regular emails to their employees that contained things that had nothing to do with advertising but that they thought were useful, interesting, or important.

Because of the popularity of the email, Popova believed that there was an "intellectual hunger for this kind of cross-disciplinary curiosity and self-directed learning ." What began as a newsletter went online in 2006 and was added to the Library of Congress 's permanent web archive in 2012 . Popova describes brain pickings as "a record of my own becoming as a person - intellectual, creative, spiritual, poetic - emerging from my extensive marginalia in search of meaning in literature, science, art, philosophy and the various other tentacles of human thought and Feeling has arisen ".

In 2012, Brain Pickings had 1.2 million readers per month and three million page visits. No advertising is broadcast on the platform. The contents of Brain Pickings are distributed over several newsletters. Popova also maintains social media accounts such as Twitter , Facebook and Instagram pages.

Awards and Recognition

Popova published two monographs "Figuring" and "A Velocity of Being". "Figuring" was awarded the LA Times Book Prize in the Science & Technology category in April 2020.

In 2012, Forbes magazine listed Popova on the "30 under 30" list in the media category. In 2015 she won the Shorty Awards for Best Blogger in the News & Media category. Popova's work has also been featured in publications such as the New York Times .
