Maria Ramos (born February 22, 1959 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese manager . She is the former CEO of Absa Group Limited, a financial services company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa , and subsidiaries in Botswana , Ghana , Kenya , Mauritius , Mozambique , Seychelles , South Africa, Tanzania , Uganda and Zambia .

Prior to joining Absa as CEO in March 2009, she was the CEO of Transnet Limited. This came after she served as director general of the National Treasury.

Earlier life

Ramos was born the eldest of four daughters. Her parents immigrated to Mozambique and then South Africa in the mid-1960s to look for better opportunities. Ramos was six years old when her family started their new life on the street in Vereeniging , some 36 miles south of Johannesburg . Ramos enrolled in 1977 and worked for Barclays in Vereeniging as a waste manager. She collected papers such as payment slips and checks from behind the cashiers and processed them manually. While searching for a scholarship, Ramos discovered that her bank had a scholarship program in place to help employees complete a university trade degree. When applying, she found that only men applied. A long battle ensued, in which Ramos had to overcome various obstacles to change the rules. Finally, she was told that if she took the basic exams and passed, they would consider her. She drove from Vereeniging to Johannesburg for evening classes at the Institute of Bankers three nights a week after work and passed the exam in record time with a diploma .
