from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria Steiner (born March 13, 1906 in Düsseldorf , † August 20, 1997 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Righteous Among the Nations .

Life

Maria Steiner, born in Düsseldorf as Maria Magdalena Werner, moved to Vienna in the 1930s , where she took in Hedwig Mendelssohn, a Jew, in her apartment in 1942. Hedwig's husband, Dr. Leopold Mendelssohn was able to emigrate to Argentina in 1942 . Since Hedwig had only married him in 1941, she and her husband could not get the necessary exit documents and stayed behind alone in Vienna. When she received a deportation order in mid-1942, she turned to Maria Steiner, who lived near her. She immediately agreed to give her shelter in her apartment.

Maria Steiner hid Hedwig Mendelssohn, despite frequent checks by the block attendant and the Gestapo, for three years until the end of the war, first in her own apartment, then in a rented apartment that she found for her, thus saving her life.
