Maria Szécsi

Marika Szécsi , pseudonym Marie Rapp , (born December 23, 1914 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; died June 3, 1984 in Vienna ) was an Austrian economist of Hungarian origin.

Life

The childhood friend of the poet Jura Soyfer came from a liberal Jewish family (she was related to Karl Polanyi and Michael Polanyi on her mother's side ). Szécsi began her studies in Vienna and had lived in Cincinnati , Ohio since 1937 with her first husband, the doctor and biochemist Samuel Mitja Rapoport . She studied economics in Cincinnati and Chicago and graduated with a Master's degree. After her divorce from Rapoport, she returned to Austria and was active in the KPÖ under the pseudonym Marie Rapp .

On the occasion of the Hungarian popular uprising of 1956, she exposed herself as a critic of the Soviet approach and, thanks to Ernst Fischer's advocacy, was allowed to publish a corresponding article in the cultural journal Tagebuch on December 15, 1956, but remained isolated within the party and left the KPÖ in May 1957 .

Maria Szécsi then worked in the economics department of the Vienna Chamber of Labor under Eduard März and taught at Webster University, Vienna , from 1982 . She was married to Eduard March for the second time .
