Ulrich was one of only a few Swiss authors in the early 20th century who came from the working class. In her literary work, Ulrich took a thoroughly socially critical stance and authentically testified to the conditions and struggle for existence of simple people in the urban proletariat. One focus was on the tightness of the home and family togetherness, as well as the position of women. In describing the poor living situation, she refrained from direct charges against it. She is also considered a dialect writer .
