Maria Valente

Maria Valente (* 1897 as Maria Siri ; † 1977) was an Italian artist , singer and well-known female music clown . She was the mother of Caterina Valente and Silvio Francesco .

Life

Maria Valente, née Siri, grew up in poor conditions in Russia . Her father was a Roman musician who came from a family of artists. During the Russian Revolution , Valente fled to Finland , where she made her way as a singer and actress on small stages. She played 33 instruments, spoke numerous languages ​​fluently and was able to captivate the audience for hours as a solo entertainer through her art and humor.

During one of these performances she met her future husband, the artist and accordion virtuoso Giuseppe Valente (1891–1957). The two married but continued to live in great poverty. The couple moved to Italy with their two children. It was there that vaudeville stages first became aware of the young woman and helped her to get her first engagements. Appearances around the globe followed. Their children also had to take part in the stage programs from an early age.

After the turmoil of the war, imprisonment in Breslau and deportation to Russia , the Valente family moved to Paris . The fate of the artist family improved when Caterina, one of the now four children, Nina, Pietro, Silvio and Caterina, had first successes as a singer in Parisian night clubs. In 1952, Caterina married and pursued her own career. Maria's son Silvio Francesco Valente (1927-2000) was also active in show business. Pietro and Nina Valente were active in the Valente troupe, Pietro also as a solo musician, but not as prominent as his two siblings Caterina and Silvio. Nina never worked solo in show business.

Maria Valente and her husband are buried in Munich's north cemetery.
