history

In the early 20th century, a hillside settlement was built in the area of today's parish, the Wiltenberg. The further expansion of the settlement after 1945 required the construction of a new church. Until then, the services were held in the Mentlberg pilgrimage church . The foundation stone of the Maria am Gestade church was laid in 1961. The church was consecrated the following year.

Building description

The church, a reinforced concrete construction in the handwriting of the leading architect Gerhard Daum , shows itself as a north-facing cubic structure with a square floor plan, whose raised roof leads to the connected and striking tower in the north. The interior impresses with the interesting lighting, which is reminiscent of the building of the pilgrimage church in Ronchamp (France) by Le Corbusier . The concrete glass wall created by Max Weiler on the west side of the church building is striking . The freestanding high altar, carved from granite blocks, stands in front of a twelve-part ascending pillar wall , in the middle of which the tabernacle is set as a globe by Rudolf Wach in a wider wall field. The high altar relief was  created by Rudolf Millonig in 1992 .
