Mary of Portugal (1527–1545)
Maria Manuela of Portugal (born October 15, 1527 in Coimbra , † July 12, 1545 in Valladolid ) was a Portuguese princess and the first wife of the later Spanish King Philip II. Her parents were King John III. of Portugal and Catherine of Castile , the sister of Charles V
Life
At birth, Maria was the king's only child and became Hereditary Princess ( Princesa herdeira da Coroa de Portugal ), a title she held until 1535.
On November 15, 1543, 16-year-old Maria was married to Philip, the Spanish heir to the throne, who was only five months older. Because of the close relatives of the spouses - Philip was a cousin of Mary - a papal dispensation had to be obtained, which was granted without any problems. On July 8, 1545, the Spanish heir Don Carlos emerged from the marriage. Don Carlos's physical and mental ailments are also attributed to the close relationship of his parents. The young mother was so badly injured by the helpers during the birth that she began to have a fever. A conflict of competence began between the Portuguese doctors, whom the young mother trusted and who prescribed sweat packs, and the Spanish doctors who relied on ice-water baths. When Maria was on her death bed, however, none of the doctors wanted to take responsibility for the worsening of her condition. After her death, the rumor was spread that she had secretly obtained lemons as a woman who had recently given birth and then died from the illicit consumption of these fruits. Maria died in childbed four days after the birth of her son on July 12, 1545 at the age of only 17. It was the chapel in 9 pantheon of Infante in El Escorial buried
