Maria von Tver (also Maria Borisovna ; * around 1442 in Tver ; † April 22, 1467 in Moscow ) was Grand Duchess of Moscow from 1462 to 1467 .

Life

Mary of Tver was a daughter of Grand Duke Boris Alexandrovich of Tver and his first wife Anastasia Andreevna of Moshaisk . Around 1447 she was betrothed to the future Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan (III) . At that time, Ivan's father Vasily II tried to strengthen his position of power. He allied himself through the marriage alliance with Maria's father against his rival on the Moscow throne, Dimitri Shemyaka . The wedding of Maria and Ivan III. took place on June 2, 1452 in the cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin .

In 1458 Maria gave birth to a son, Ivan Ivanovich, to her husband . She became Grand Duchess of Moscow in 1462 when her husband ascended the throne after the death of his father Vasily II. She died in April 1467 at the age of about 25. She is said to have been poisoned. Although the marriage was only for political reasons, it was from Ivan III. sincerely mourned. In 1472 Ivan entered into a second marriage with Sofia Palaiologa .

Mary's tomb was in the Resurrection Monastery , which was located inside the Kremlin and was destroyed in 1929, after which her remains were transferred to the Archangel Michael Cathedral (Moscow) .
