Mariann Edgar Budde

Mariann Edgar Budde (born December 10, 1959 in New Jersey ) is an American bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America .

Life

Budde studied Anglican theology at the University of Rochester and Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria , Virginia . She became a deaconess on May 28, 1988 and was ordained a priestess on March 4, 1989. After five years as Associate Rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio , she worked from 1993 to 2011 as a parish pastor ( rector ) at St. John's Church in Minneapolis .

On July 18, 2011, Budde was elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington (the first woman to assume this office and ninth in the order of bishops of that diocese). On November 12th, 2011 she was consecrated by Katharine Jefferts Schori and introduced as bishop.

Budde is married and has two children.

The Virginia Theological Seminary , where she received her Master of Divinity in 1988 and Doctor of Ministry in 2007 , awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2012 .
