Synnes entered the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the first time in the 2017 general election . There she represents the constituency of Møre og Romsdal and she became a member of the Health and Welfare Committee. In February 2018 she switched to the Education and Research Committee. In March 2020, she announced that she would not run for a seat in parliament again in the 2021 election and would return to the NTNU after the election. She justified the move with the fact that the parliamentary work did not meet her expectations.
