Mariano Velázquez de la Cadena

Mariano Velázquez de la Cadena (born June 28, 1778 in Mexico City , † February 19, 1860 ) was an American Romance scholar and Hispanist of Mexican origin.

life and work

Velázquez graduated from school and university in Madrid. He was in the service of the Spanish royal family, but after the imprisonment of Charles IV. In 1808 he renounced his stay in Spain, and in view of the Mexican turmoil did not return to his home country, but to New York, where he built his life as a foreign language teacher, Lexicographer and Spanish Teacher at Columbia University .
