The Marie vole or Marie's small vole ( Volemys musseri ) is a rodent species from the genus Volemys within the voles (Arvicolinae). It is only known from the west of Sichuan in the People's Republic of China .
features
The Marie vole reaches a head-trunk length of 9.0 to 12.9 centimeters with a tail of 4.7 to 7.0 centimeters in length . The rear foot length is 18 to 23 millimeters. The skull has a total length of 24.5 to 27.5 millimeters.
The back fur is dark brown, the peritoneum dark grayish with a pale sand-colored wash. The tail is two-colored with a dark brown top and white-sand-colored underside. The tops of the hands and feet are sandy-white. In appearance, it corresponds to the Sichuan vole ( Volemys millicens ), but is significantly larger and also differs from it by the fact that it has postero-lingual triangles in the enamel of the first two upper molars M1 and M2.
distribution
The Marie vole is known to only a few individuals from the Qionglai Shan in western Sichuan in the People's Republic of China .
Way of life
There is no information available about the way of life of the Marie vole. The known habitats are in stony pastures at altitudes between 2300 and 3700 meters. Like other voles, it lives in underground burrows and probably feeds mainly herbivorous on various parts of the plant.
Systematics
The Marie vole is classified as an independent species within the genus Volemys , which consists of two species. The first scientific description comes from the American zoologist Marie A. Lawrence , who described the species in 1982 using individuals from the Qionglai Shan in western Sichuan. The genus and thus also this species is partly assigned to the field mice ( Microtus ).
The species was named after the American zoologist Guy G. Musser , but the common name is derived from the first name Marie of the first descriptor Marie A. Lawrence. Lawrence was working for the American Museum of Natural History at the time of the first description .
Status, threat and protection
The Marie-Wühlmaus is not classified in a hazard category by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to a lack of data, but is listed as "data deficient". Potential threats to the stocks are unknown.
