Volemys is a genus of rodents in the subfamily of voles (Arvicolinae) with two species that are found in the Chinese province of Sichuan .

The genus includes the following species:

  • Sichuan vole ( Volemys millicens ), lives in mountains above 4000 meters above sea level.
  • Marie-Wühlmaus or Marie's Little Wühlmaus ( Volemys musseri ), inhabits mountain regions between 2300 and 3700 meters above sea level.

In the past, the species Microtus clarkei and Microtus kikuchii were also included in the genus Volemys .

These voles reach a head-trunk length of 83 to 130 mm and a tail length of 46 to 70 mm. They are colored dark brown on the top, the fur on the underside is light brown or gray. The short tail also has a dark top and a light underside. The flat skull lacks prominent humps and edges. The Volemys species also differ from other voles in the details of their molars .

The inhabited mountains are covered with forests and mountain meadows. Since the species are very rare, almost nothing is known about their way of life.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) lists both species with insufficient data ( data deficient ).
